3 Creative Ways To Immortalise Your Departed Loved One

How often do we miss everyday things about the people we’ve lost?

Their smiles

Unexpressed feelings

Advices

Or life experiences shared together?

One way to overcome it is to create activities that can be therapeutic and also creative to keep such memories alive.

This is one of the reasons I chose to have a memorial site dedicated to my late mother, Janet Akintuyi. Pushing for a change in digital memorials makes it easy for me to honour her with it.

So for you, you don’t really have to do anything out of the world. But it’s okay if you can. But if you are at a loss as to what to do, here are some of the ideas that are worth pursuing.

Set up a foundation in the Name Of Your Of Your Loved One(s)

I recently came across a foundation by one of Nollywood’s great actress, Omoni Oboli. While celebrating her 40th birthday, she introduced her fans to Sister Lizzy Kitchen, in honour of her mother. This foundation is designed to feed many indigent people at no cost.

Other things you could do with a foundation include:

Name a Building or Enterprise After The Person

Many buildings that dot the length and breadth of Lagos where I live are erected in memory of a departed loved one. Sometimes, the owner does erect statues that depict their departed loved ones.

Other things you can do to honour a departed loved one with a building include:

  • Donating a block of classroom to your Alma mata
  • Renovating part of or an entire building in a hospital
  • Having a shelter for people of circumstances such as abused women or rape victims.

If you can’t afford such venture, you might want to check in with your local government authorities on the possibility of having a street named in honour of the person.

Write a Book

I get excited when I purchase a book and see it dedicated to someone who have worked on the project with the writer. However, more often than not, some writers take it a step further and dedicate it to their late parents, friends or celebrities that inspire them. My sister wrote a book on Cancer Prevention in memory of our mother.

Many people have found comfort in writing and dedicating it to their departed loved ones. It remains one of the best ways to immortalise loved ones.

You could write a book on

  • Love
  • Marriage
  • Parenting
  • Making Money

Or simply anything that catches your fancy.

So, there you have it. Are there ways you’ve done anything to immortalise a departed loved one?
